Abstract

This research examines an urban issue that significantly influences the urban environment, either positively or negatively, namely the neglect of public squares and open spaces within residential communities. These spaces serve as the “lungs” of the city as a whole and of residential neighborhoods in particular, as they provide a healthy environment that supports the achievement of urban environmental objectives. Moreover, they play a vital role in reinforcing the principles of sustainable urban design, while also contributing to meeting residents’ needs and providing essential services.The significance of this study lies in its focus on the importance of open spaces and their role in advancing a sustainable urban environment, as well as the broader impacts they have on the city. The study aims to explore the concepts of sustainable urban environments and the mechanisms for achieving them within the study area, in addition to assessing their social and cultural effects on residents.
